Kōyasan Eki (Koyasan Station) - Japan. 2025.

Japanese maples and yellow Ginkos catch the afternoon light as we depart the sacred Buddhist complex of Mount Koya.

It's a serene image captured in less than 5 seconds amidst a hoard of people all rushing to get on the Nankai Cable Car.
Happy new year Instagram friends 🎉.

Saiho-ji Temple - Kyoto. 2025

山 - mountain
I'm slowly departing and evolving from my typical photography style. The best way I can express is by trying to explain the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi Sabi. It is a philosophical view that finds beauty in imperfection, acceptance of natural cycles of growth and decay, and the value of humble craftsmanship.

Previously, I would have offered you a highly edited version of this image. One with less grain, cloned out distractions, geometrically corrected perspectives etc. But here I offer you an image that is mostly straight out of camera and includes the falling red leaves of the maple which appear as red specs, some blown highlights in the clouds, film grain and a slightly off centre mountain. The pursuit of perfection has held me back for a long time and even prevented me from posting and working through backlogs of photographs. I've sacked that inner voice which whispered "it's not good enough". Time to let that go, and start sharing my art, warts and all.

It's World Photography Day 🥳

If you've been following along in my photographic journey over the last two decades, you will know that the images I create, are the way that I see the world. Picking up a camera has helped me to see things differently, to look closer, and experience life more deeply. And raising a camera to the eye is a different psychological experience (at least for me), than holding your phone out and clicking away shots, rarely ever reflecting on the images you've taken.

Every photograph becomes a captured moment of how I experienced the world at that granular point in time. In this case, walking the streets of Italy in 2011 with my wife at dusk, looking for a cosy tratoria to share some pasta and wine in.

Just in case you've forgotten what the sun looks like 😅

We're getting some wet and wild weather on the east coast this winter, but occasionally the mornings are crisp and glorious, just like this one.
Blayney, NSW, on a chilly morning where the fog had sprinkled a crust of frost on the grass.

Seeing the country is one of the many perks of flying drones with @grey_steel91 and Rasco UAV. You don't get to see this sitting in the office 😉
Been a busy couple of months working on Sonmi Studios projects and feeling a little burnt out already. Poor sleep yesterday and lying in bed at 4am decided to take the new toy/tool Fuji X100VI for a 5km walk along the Newcastle coastline.

Im testing a theory that having a small, compact camera that shoots 40MP images, will be more conducive to me grabbing a camera for wherever I go, and therefore, get me shooting more. So there's going to be more street photography, more experimentation, more attention to quintessential moments and unexpected pockets of light :-)

So far, I'm really pleased with the Fuji and loving the old school feel of the camera. A 35mm fixed lens is also taking some adjusting to.

These are 95% SOOC and if you're wondering about that lovely glow, its because i have a Moment 10% Cinebloom diffusion filter on the front 🤩

This is a different composition of Halls Falls that I posted recently. In this version, I changed the point of view to make the flow of water into and out of frame more of an S shape. To me, it gives the sensation that the eye follows a longer path and stays within the image longer, and the viewer tends to pay attention to the finer details as it follows the misty white line of water flow. The scale of the river boulders is also significantly different, making this angle feel more rugged, and the image more textured. Share in the comments if you feel the same, or differently. I'm curious which of the two versions you prefer.

Hope you've enjoyed another taste of Tasmania 😊

PS: I've included the full length version because I felt that the forced 4:5 Instagram crop caused too much crowding and you missed out on the mist and sunbeams at the top of the waterfall.

We fled east, leaving the baked earth of Tennant Creek and clouds of gold mine dust in our wake. We waved goodbye to the build-up and downpours of monsoonal torrential rain. 670km of desert driving with my wife and our dog, from Waramungu to Ranken, and then we crossed into Queensland at Camooweal; One state closer to home.

Our stop for the night was Mt Isa, but first a visit to Moondarra Lake for sunset. We waited in the car as a brief storm sent clouds of hissing steam skyward. The sunburnt land cooled. Red dust washed from our 4wd. And we watched the fading sun light up the sky as storm clouds receded and thunder rumbled in the distance.

From a diary entry, Day 2, Leaving the Territory. 19th December 2020. Almost four years to the day.

With photography (and perhaps in life), sometimes you just turn up and get lucky. But to get lucky, you have to turn up.

Mount Field National Park is probably one of Tasmania's most under-rated destinations. We almost skipped it; How sad that would have been! If you're doing a lap around the apple isle, this is the perfect place to stay before finishing in Hobart. Get yourself an Airbnb overnight, eat at the local pub for dinner, and then light the fire of an evening. Explore all the tracks and waterfalls by day. Truly majestic country <3

I first photographed this amazing luxury indoor swimming pool when it belonged to the Observatory Hotel in Sydney. The hotel is now called the Langham. It was one of my first tastes of shooting indoor architecture. Hard not to fall in love with those sandstone pillars, deep aquatic blues and that star lit ceiling.

If you need a photographer who can give your special project the luxury treatment, book me. Whether you need glossy images for a website, print, or a 360 degree virtual tour, I've got you covered.
